Support for Carers

Unpaid Carer Support

A carer is someone of any age who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without help. The person they care for could have additional needs, a disability, mental ill health, substance misuse problems or need a bit of help as they get older.

An unpaid carer may or may not be receiving carers allowance.

Many people do not recognise themselves as carers and see the support they provide as their duty. Caring is rewarding but it can be difficult. It is important to recognise your own needs for support. You have a right to information to support you in your caring role, which can include a carers needs assessment.

Newport Young Carers Service

The service supports young and young adult carers from age 8 to 25 years.

Young people with caring responsibilities have all the challenges of being young, with all the responsibilities of being an adult. We help them look after their loved ones and give them time to enjoy their childhoods.

Barnardo’s provide a needs based service offering different packages of support, from individual support, peer support via themed groups, issue based workshops/groups, activities/trips/residential breaks.
