6th Form Pathways Evening

Back
13th November 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

Further to my first letter a few weeks ago, I am now able to provide you with the information you require for our 6th form open evening on Thursday 28th November 5.00 – 6.40pm.

Please find with this letter, courses offered at Newport High, our most recent collaboration pathways option sheet which shows all the A levels and BTEC courses currently on offer for September 2024 at Newport High, Bassaleg, St. Joseph’s and John Frost and also a programme of events and location for the pathways evening. Please note that no course is guaranteed and spaces on courses also cannot be guaranteed. The subjects on offer are subject to change.

To support you and your child in selecting appropriate and engaging courses, the evening will provide an opportunity to listen to presentations from myself as Head of Year and subject teachers which will also include time for questions. Please note that this is not a parents’ evening and therefore no discussion around current progress will take place. The discussions should be about students’ suitability for the course, subject content and entry requirements.

All post-16 courses available to study at Newport High School will be represented on the evening including our Rugby Academy.

If you have any further questions before or after the evening has taken place, please do not hesitate to contact me on lj@newporthigh.co.uk

With regards to entry requirements and choosing subjects, please see the recommended guidance below:

Students must achieve at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE including Maths and English to be offered a place in Sixth Form. Students are also offered a place if they have a D grade in either Maths/Numeracy or English but must have a C grade or above in the other. These students will then be expected to re-sit Maths or English. Therefore, these options are provisional at this stage and students will confirm their final options on enrolment day in the summer holidays following the publication of the GCSE results.

It is compulsory for all students to study the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate, which will be allocated to their timetable once they have made their other choices. This is a compulsory full A level for all students at Newport High.

Students should choose two or three options from columns A-E. Only one choice can be made in each column. Staff will provide guidance to your son/daughter on the number of A levels chosen on an individual basis based on the students’ GCSE results.

Students should consider choosing:

  • subjects they are achieving well in at GCSE (at least a C grade, but ideally higher. Some courses will expect a minimum of a Bgrade or higher at GCSE);
  • subjects that they have studied at GCSE level and want to extend their knowledge further;
  • subjects that relate to a future career choice;
  • subjects that are at Newport High School wherever possible to minimise travel disruption, maximise support and ensure a successful transition into Year 12.

If students are applying to University in Year 13, I would recommend that they access the UCAS website www.ucas.com and look at specific entry requirements for particular careers. Some courses require very specific A level subjects.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 30th November

Yours faithfully
