Dear Parents and Carers,
Year 5 and Year 6 Open Evening
On Monday, we held our Year 5 & Year 6 Open Evening. This included presentations from our Year 7 Rise Up Reps who were on hand, along with a number of other students and staff, to answer questions and support. It was lovely to see our next cohorts of students at school and I would like to thank all the families who attended for their support.
Year 7 Welcome meetings
We appreciate that it is a big change for the whole family when our students join us in Year 7. Parents and carers must adjust to the change from being a parent/carer of a Primary school student to that of a child in High School. To support this transition we will be holding Year 7 Parental meetings with your child’s Form Tutor on Monday. These are taking place in person at our school and you will need to book a time slot.
Parental Forums
Working closely with our families is an essential element of ensuring that our students make progress. To support this, we are continuing to run both our on-line Parental Forum and our Parental drop-in sessions. These are calendared across the year with the next forums taking place in early December.
These are not parent/student meetings to discuss specific queries but an opportunity to meet with myself so you can raise broader issues about the school. We will share dates and timings after the half-term break.
Parking
Just a reminder please that no-one should be parking on double yellow lines or in any restricted parking areas. This includes the loading bay in front of our services area.
Free School Meals
If you are not in receipt of Free School Meals but think you are eligible and would like any help in accessing, please let us know so we can help.
Social Media
Please can I urge all parents who have an issue or concern about school to contact us directly to discuss. This will give us the opportunity to try to resolve the issue.
If you have any concerns, please email us on: info@newporthigh.co.uk
Punctuality to school and lessons.
We have a small number of students who are persistently late to lessons, always try to leave lessons and deliberately walk the longest route to get to their next class. This will be a focus for the rest of this term as we want to ensure that every student has the best possible chance of success. Please can you reinforce the importance of punctuality and work with us to support your children.
New after school bike club at Newport High School
Our new bike club meets every Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm in the main yard behind the canteen. This new initiative is being led by Mr Jones, in collaboration with Momentwm. If there are any families who have not signed up but are interested in joining, please email info@newporthigh.co.uk with the heading “Bike Club” in the title. You do not need to have your own bike or helmet to come along as we can provide these. The group is open to students and their parents or carers from Newport High School.
Uniform and equipment
A small number of students still do not have school bags. Bags are important as students need to carry their equipment and timetables around during the day. Also, as we are now a mobile phone free school, they need somewhere secure to store their phones during school hours. If anyone has any issues with uniform or equipment, please let us know so we can work with you to support.
Mobile Phones
We do not allow the use of mobile phones anywhere in school, including outside during break and lunchtime. This means that, from the time that students enter the building until they leave, they are not allowed to be seen with a mobile phone. This includes wearing air pods or headphones which are also not allowed.
If they wish to bring a phone to school, it must be switched off and kept in their bag
If students are seen with their mobile phone out, whether they are using them or not, it will need to be handed in for them to collect at the end of the day. If this happens frequently then an alternative plan will need to be put in place.
Inset days and Term dates – 2023/2024
The remaining INSET days (when school is closed to students for staff training) for this year are as follows:
We break up for October half-term on Friday 25th October and return to school on Monday 4th November. We then finish for the Christmas holidays on Friday 20th December and return for the start of the Spring term on Monday 6th January 2025.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your continued support.
With kind regards
Mrs Lee
