Years 10 and 11

English Language

This course takes place over the two years.

20% = NEA 1 individual presentation (10%) and group discussion (10%)

40% = Reading and writing: Description, Narration and Exposition (40%) 2 hours

40% = Reading and writing: Argumentation, Persuasion & Instructional 2 hours

English Literature

Years 10 and 11

The course will take place over two years and completed at the end of year 11.

Your child will be entered for either higher or foundation tier.

Unit 1 = Prose / unseen poetry External assessment 2hrs (35%)

Unit 2a: Literary heritage drama and contemporary prose: External assessment 2 hrs (40%)

Unit 3 = NEA Shakespeare and Welsh writing in English (25%)

Year 10 – 25% NEA – Unit 1 oracy response to visual stimulus

Year 11 – 25% NEA – Unit 2 communicating with other people

Year 11 – 25% Unit 3 - Narrative, specific and instructional (25%) 1.5 hrs paper- reading and writing

Year 11 – 25% Unit 4 : Descriptive, creative and imaginative (25%) 1.5 hrs paper – reading and writing

Your child can be entered for a mixture of higher and foundation tiers – depending on their strengths.

All units are completed in Year 11:

Marking and Feedback

We are committed to ensuring every student reaches their full potential with specific and targeted feedback regularly. 
Each student will be given regular feedback across Connect that ensures they make progress.  Every 3/4 hours, students will either have peer / self or teacher feedback.

In Connect, we are proud to have an annual Eisteddfod, celebrating the success of our students and showcasing the talent at Newport High. 

There is annual trip to France in the summer as well future residential trips to Llangrannog.

Library sessions and Accelerated Reader

All students in Year 7 & 8 have an hour’s library session every fortnight.  They are encouraged to borrow a book regularly to read.

All Year 7 & 8 students have logins for Accelerated Reader where they can test themselves after reading a book.  There will be prizes for the most read students!

Homework

All students are encouraged to complete homework regularly.
