Letter from Headteacher – 16th July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have now had the detailed guidance from the Welsh Government about re-opening schools in September.

We are beginning by bringing back our new Year 7 students with those students in Years 12 and 13 on Thursday 3rd September.

The rest of the school will start on Monday 7th September. There is no need for any one to book their child into school as all students are expected unless there is a medical reason they can not attend and this would need to be reported to school in the usual way.

Date Year groups Time
Thursday 3rd September Year 7, Year 12 and Year 13 8.45am
Friday 4th September Year 7, Year 12 and Year 13 8.45am
Monday 7th September All year groups but with staggered start times for Monday 7th only. Yr. 7, Yr.12 & Yr. 13 – 8.45am

Yr. 8 & Yr. 10 – 9.00am

Yr. 9 & Yr. 11 9.15am

In line with Welsh Government guidance we have put all students into contact groups. In Key Stage 3 and 4 the contact groups are the student’s year group. In the 6th Form the contact group is Key Stage 5. To reduce social contact different year groups will be asked to come into school through different doors, and, in line with guidance, students will be housed in wings with the rest of their year group.

Year group Entrance Wing
Yr. 7 Door 1 Green wing downstairs
Yr. 8 Main reception Red wing downstairs
Yr. 9 Door 3 Green wing upstairs
Yr. 10 Door 2 Purple wing upstairs
Yr. 11 Door 4 (Sports hall) Red wing upstairs
Yr. 12 Door 4 (Sports hall) Blue wing
Yr. 13 Door 4 (Sports hall) Blue wing

On their first day students will be met by their Form tutor and Head of Year at their allocated door at the times listed above.

On subsequent days, to avoid unnecessary mixing of students before school, all students should wait by their designated door to be welcomed into the building which will happen each day at 8.40am. Students will be asked on entering the building to sanitise their hands and make their way straight to their Form room ready for registration at 8.45am.

We will not be offering our breakfast club for the first few weeks and we will review this during the term.

All students will follow their full timetable but will have limited movement around the school. Some of the practical activities in lessons may have to be modified to ensure we comply with Health and Safety requirements. We are working hard to ensure that your child will have access to the full range of experiences in school however, mitigating risks for the safety of all our students and staff is our overwhelming priority.

All students are expected to return to school in September except those with clear medical reasons not to do so.

Under no circumstances should your child be sent into school if they are feeling unwell or if they have any of the three identified symptoms including:

  • a new continuous cough
  • a high temperature
  • loss of taste and smell,
  • have tested positively for COVID19 within the last 14 days.

Likewise, if anyone in your household has tested positively or is displaying symptoms, your child should not attend. In line with Welsh Government guidance anyone displaying symptoms should make arrangements to be tested for COVID19.

We have changed the timings of the day slightly to enable us to be able to run two different breaktimes and two different lunchtimes.

For the first few weeks we are not able to offer school lunches except for those students entitled to Free School Meals who will be offered grab bags of cold food at lunchtime. All students who are not entitled to Free School Meals will need to bring a packed lunch with them until further notice.

We will review this as the term progresses and hope to be able to offer lunches to all students at some point during the term.

Control measures will be in place to minimise contact between contact groups and to maintain good hygiene. All students will be expected to clean their hands frequently and will be required to:

  • Sanitising their hands on entering the school building
  • Sanitising their hands before entering any classroom
  • Sanitising their hands before leaving any classroom
  • Sanitising their hands before entering the toilets
  • Washing hands after going to the toilet.
  • Sanitising their hands before break and lunchtime
  • Sanitising their hands on leaving school

All students are expected to return to school in full school uniform.

As not all students will be in school until Monday 7th September, any students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 who are in receipt of Free School Meals can come to collect a two-day grab bag on Thursday 3rd September from school between 9am-10am. These can be picked up from the main reception. Unfortunately, due to restrictions around social contact these meals will only be available on Thursday 3rd during that one-hour window.

I appreciate this is a lot of information to take in and I would like to thank you for your continued support.

With Kind Regards

Mrs Lee
