Whole School Letter – 10-06-2022

Friday 10th June 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

I hope everyone managed to have a lovely half-term and enjoy the great bank holiday weather.

Queen’ s Platinum Jubilee

On Tuesday we were delighted to welcome some very special guests into school to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We were so proud that members of Bettws Food Bank were able to join us for our first live performance in over two years. The last live event we ran was the Carol Concert in December 2019 and we had no idea back then that within just a few weeks the world would be changed by a global pandemic and that all schools would move to remote learning just a few months later. This made this week’s concert feel extra special and our students certainly rose to the occasion. None of this would have been possible without the hard work behind the scenes of Mrs James and Mrs Akhtar-Matthews. I would also like to thank our fantastic catering team who made the most amazing cakes and our site team who set up the venue. Of course, the stars of the show were the students themselves and I was incredibly proud to witness the level of talent we have at Newport High School. We are looking forward to being able to run more live events next year as we slowly return to a more normal way of working.

Break & lunch

This week we have successful returned to one break and lunchtime which is allowing us to restart some of our extra-curricular clubs again. We will continue to monitor this over the next couple of weeks and hopefully be able to offer more activities during lunchtime. Over the summer holidays we will be installing two new outdoor canopies which will provide more outside shelter to complement the new sports equipment we invested in earlier this year. It has been lovely to see the students outside enjoying the sunshine.

We still have a few students who are persistently late to school and late to lessons and it is important for everyone’s learning that students arrive on time and are equipped for their lesson. If students arrive 10 minutes late for each lesson, over the course of the week they are missing over 4 hours of learning which equates to them missing almost a day a week of their education. Please can parents and carers reinforce the importance of punctuality to your children.

Parking on school site

We are still getting parents parking directly outside the visitor and staff car park. Please can parents and carers not park here as it creates an unnecessary safety risk at the end of the school day, causes additional congestion and blocks access to the school compound. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to make the school site safer for everyone.

Community activities at the North Hub

The North Hub are starting a monthly Woodland Wellbeing Group. The first session is taking place on 23rd  June at 10am. Places are free but there is limited availability so you need to book by following the link. It is still important that any student who is unwell with Covid-19 symptoms does not attend school.

With many thanks for your continued support.

Kind regards

Mrs Lee
