Whole School Letter – 06-05-2022

Friday 6th May 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

Teaching and Learning focus

We are still following our DRICE approach to support Teaching and Learning at Newport High School. This term our focus has been on assessment for learning. Assessment for learning allows each teacher to gauge the progress of each individual student in their class through a variety of strategies that include using whiteboards, asking questions, using quizzes and testing. This allows the teacher to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of each student. Assessment for learning is used in every lesson to ensure high quality learning is taking place.

Key Dates

Just a reminder of the last few term dates for this year and next year’s term dates.  We break for half-term on Friday 27th May and return to school for the final half-term of this academic year on Monday 6th June.

Lost property

I emailed all parents last week about the collection arrangements for the significant amount of lost property we have in school, the vast majority of which is school uniform and other items of clothing. We keep the most recent lost property in the wellbeing hub for students to collect then, after about a week, it gets moved to create space for newer lost property to be stored in the hub.

We do not have the space to store the volume of lost property we have accumulated and so we will have to dispose of any items of lost property that remain unclaimed by the end of Thursday, 12th May.

If your child has lost any property, please can you encourage them to come to the wellbeing hub at break or lunchtime before the end of Thursday 12th May to collect their items. To support this process, we have also been holding collection sessions for parents and carers to come to school to collect lost items. The last of these sessions will be on Tuesday 10th May and Thursday 12th May between 3.15pm-3.45pm.

Parental and carer questionnaire

Thanks to all the Parents and Carers who have competed the Spring feedback questionnaire. If there are any Parents or Carers who have not been able to do this yet, please can these be completed by Monday 16th May.

Newport High School – smoke free zone

Just a reminder that Newport High School is a Smoke Free Zone and smoking on school grounds can result in a fixed penalty fine of £100. If any parents or carers would like support in giving up smoking this can be accessed through Help Me Quit (HMQ). Contact HMQ by phone – 0800 085 2219 or via the HMQ website – www.helpmequit.wales.

Community activities at the North Hub

Welsh Water and the North Hub have joined forces to support local residents with a drop-in advice session on Tuesday 17th May at 1.30pm. In addition to financial support they have safeguarding services for those with medical conditions, disabilities, the elderly and those with young children.  To register at this event please follow the link. School uniform

Just a reminder that we have reverted to our no coats in lessons rule and students will be expected to remove their coats in lessons.

Covid-19

It is still important that any student who is unwell with Covid-19 symptoms does not attend school.

With many thanks for your continued support.

Kind regards

Mrs Lee
