Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach the summer holidays and warmer weather, we would like to share an important water safety message from Water Safety Wales.

Across the UK, recent periods of hot weather have unfortunately been linked to a high number of water-related incidents involving children and young people. Whether visiting beaches, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals or other open water locations, it is vital that everyone understands how to stay safe around water.

Key Water Safety Messages

Please remind your child:

• Never jump into open water from bridges, piers, rocks or ledges.

• Open water can contain hidden dangers, including cold temperatures, strong currents, changing depths and submerged objects.

• Always visit water locations with friends or family and choose lifeguarded venues wherever possible.

• Follow the Water Safety Code:

Stop and Think – Take time to assess your surroundings and identify any dangers.

Stay Together – Always stay with friends or family when around water.

Float – If you get into difficulty in the water, float on your back to help control your breathing.

Call 999 – In an emergency, call for help. Never enter the water to attempt a rescue.

Float to Live

If you find yourself in trouble in the water:

• Tilt your head back and keep your ears submerged.
• Relax and try to breathe normally.
• Move your hands gently to help you stay afloat.
• Do not worry if your legs sink – everyone floats differently.
• Once the effects of cold, water shock have passed, call or shout for help

If You See Someone Else in Trouble

Remember: Phone, Float, Throw

• Phone 999 immediately.
• Encourage the person to Float on their back.
• Throw something that floats to help them, if available.
• Do not enter the water yourself.

A Reminder for Parents and Carers

Children and young people should always be actively supervised around open water. While friends can help by staying together and raising the alarm, they should never be expected to enter the water to rescue someone.
