Dear Parents and Carers,
Values and Rise
The themes this week have been equality and being equipped. Part of being equipped is being ready for the future. To support all of our students to be ready for their future we place a great emphasis on careers and work options. Part of this includes working with employers to support with a range of different activities.
For the past two weeks we have been working with dabapps, a local company that works with a range of different businesses to develop apps and digital solutions. We are extremely lucky that Chris Palk, the CEO of dabapps is an ex-Newport High student. Students in years 7-11 have researched dabapps and come up with questions to ask Chris. Chris then joins our assemblies via Teams every day to answer these questions and to talk about his success. We are extremely grateful to Chris, Careers Wales and all the employers who support us for their valuable input.
Public Examinations
We hope that all students are revising effectively at home to reinforce the learning taking place in school. For students in Key Stage 4, lessons will continue throughout the examination period, and it is extremely important that students attend to benefit fully from the support available.
Please be aware that, in line with other schools across Newport, there will be no study leave for KS4 students. All Year 11 students are expected to attend school every day until they have completed their final examination and all required coursework.
Students must continue to attend their normal timetabled lessons, even when they have already sat the exam for that subject. If a lesson coincides with an exam they have completed, students should bring appropriate revision materials to continue preparing for their remaining examinations. Research shows clearly that students who maintain regular lesson attendance up to their final exam tend to achieve stronger outcomes.
A wide range of revision guides and helpful resources is available on the Power UP website, which can be accessed via the Power Up link.
If students feel they need extra support in any subject, they should speak directly with their class teacher, who will be best placed to offer guidance and assistance.
It is completely normal for students to feel nervous during this period. These feelings are a natural response to challenging and important situations and can help improve performance by increasing focus and motivation.
A-Level Results Day will take place on Thursday 13th August, and GCSE Results Day on Thursday 20th August. Further information about results days will be shared later in the Summer Term.
Parent Power
Parent Power are a fantastic charity that we are proud to work with. They aim to reduce inequality by supporting young people and their families. They recognise that some students have more access to top universities and well‑paid careers than others, and work to close that gap by giving families the knowledge and confidence to support their children.
Parent Power supports all pathways—not just university. Whether a young person is aiming for higher education, an apprenticeship, or work, the charity offers advice and workshops from as early as Year 7 to help families make informed choices and help every child reach their potential.
There are still a few places left on the next completely free trip to Jesus College, at the University of Oxford on Saturday 2nd May.
