Headteacher update – 20th July 2020

Monday 20th

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, I would like to thank all parents, carers and students for their support this term. It has been a challenging transition moving from home learning to a partial re-opening and then preparing for a full opening in September and this has been made easier by the brilliant attitude of our families. It has been great for me to start to meet our students and to have the opportunity to speak to some parents which is an invaluable part of improvement planning.

As many of you know I am planning on setting up a parental forum in the new term and I hope as many of you as possible will take part in this. Through working together, we can ensure Newport High School delivers a first-class education for all.

Just a reminder that we are opening as follows in the new academic year:

Date Year groups Time
Thursday 3rd September Year 7, Year 12 and Year 13 8.45am
Friday 4th September Year 7, Year 12 and Year 13 8.45am
Monday 7th September All year groups but with staggered start times for Monday 7th only. Yr. 7, Yr.12 & Yr. 13 – 8.45am

Yr. 8 & Yr. 10 – 9.00am

Yr. 9 & Yr. 11 9.15am

From Tuesday 8th September All year groups 8.45am (doors open at 8.40am)

To reduce social contact, in line with Welsh Government guidance we are allocating specific doors to different year groups and this is how they need to enter the school building. We are also limiting movement around the school so year groups will be housed in wings.

Year group Entrance Wing
Yr. 7 Door 1 Green wing downstairs
Yr. 8 Main reception Red wing downstairs
Yr. 9 Door 3 Green wing upstairs
Yr. 10 Door 2 Purple wing upstairs
Yr. 11 Door 4 (Sports hall) Red wing upstairs
Yr. 12 Door 4 (Sports hall) Blue wing
Yr. 13 Door 4 (Sports hall) Blue wing

On their first day students will be met by their Form tutor and Head of Year at their allocated door at the times listed above.

On subsequent days, to avoid unnecessary mixing of students before school, all students should wait by their designated door to be welcomed into the building which will open each day at 8.40am. Students will be asked, on entering the building, to sanitise their hands and make their way straight to their Form room ready for registration at 8.45am.

All students are expected to return to school in September except those with clear medical reasons not to do so. If you are unsure if your child should be returning please seek advice from your GP.

Under no circumstances should your child be sent into school if they are feeling unwell or if they have any of the three identified symptoms including:

  • a new continuous cough
  • a high temperature
  • loss of taste and smell,
  • have tested positively for COVID19 within the last 14 days.

Likewise, if anyone in your household has tested positively or is displaying symptoms, your child should not attend. In line with Welsh Government guidance anyone displaying symptoms should make arrangements to be tested for COVID19. Please ensure you keep the school informed if your child is unable to attend so we can monitor attendance accurately.

We have changed the timings of the day slightly to enable us to be able to run two different breaktimes and two different lunchtimes.

For the first few weeks we are not able to offer school lunches except for those students entitled to Free School Meals who will be offered grab bags of cold food at lunchtime.

All students who are not entitled to Free School Meals will need to bring a packed lunch with them until further notice.

There will also be no breakfast club for the first few weeks.  We will review this as the term progresses and hope to be able to offer lunches and re-instate our breakfast club at some point during the term.

Control measures will be in place to minimise contact between contact groups and to maintain good hygiene. All students will be expected to clean their hands frequently and will be required to:

  • Sanitising their hands on entering the school building
  • Sanitising their hands before entering any classroom
  • Sanitising their hands before leaving any classroom
  • Sanitising their hands before entering the toilets
  • Washing hands after going to the toilet.
  • Sanitising their hands before break and lunchtime
  • Sanitising their hands on leaving school

All students are expected to return to school in full school uniform. The details of our school uniform suppliers are on the website and all students currently in Year 6 have been given this information as part of their transition.  Any parents of students in Year 6 can access all the transition information on our school website in the dedicated transition information area.

It was a real highlight of the term for me to be part of the Newport High team who visited all our cluster primary schools last week to meet our new students. We were able to run through some key information and answer any questions that the students had. Many thanks to our fantastic cluster primary schools who, despite their own busy schedules, created the time to ensure these visits were able to happen.

As not all students will be in school until Monday 7th September, any students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 who are in receipt of Free School Meals can come to collect a two-day grab bag on Thursday 3rd September from school between 9am-10am. These can be picked up from the main reception. Unfortunately, due to restrictions around social contact these meals will only be available on Thursday 3rd during that one-hour window.

I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer break and look forward to welcoming your children back next term.

With Kind Regards

Mrs Lee
